Pinus densiflora ‘Rainbow’

Slow growing variety with golden discoloration on the needles.

Low tree with slow growth and bushy, spreading habit reaching 2-3 m in height. Grows about 10-15 cm annually. Needles bunched in twos, green with distinct transverse yellow-cream discoloration, which can turn red in the winter. Golden coloration of the needles is sharper and more vivid than other varieties of this type.

No special cultivation requirements.  Grows well in almost any average, well-drained and permeable garden soil. Requires a sunny location, secluded, sheltered from the wind (zone 5b).

Variety suited for growing in home gardens, for creating colorful, contrasting compositions of coniferous plants, planting in rock gardens and moorlands.

A variety of unknown origin, possibly Australian, cultivated in the U.S. and Europe before 2000.
