Wiesław Gawryś
Polish Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden

Graduate from Horticultural Technical School in Sochaczew and the Faculty of Horticulture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.  Has worked at the Botanical Garden of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw for 37 years. Initially, as dendrologist, then a specialist in tropical plants, and more recently involved in native flora. He serves as the Deputy Director.  Has participated in many botanical expeditions in Poland and abroad, among others to North Korea., Vietnam, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Author of more than 250 popular scientific articles on dendrology, tropical plants and Polish flora.  Author the Latin-Polish dictionary of Herbaceous Plants. Primarily interested in Polish flora, the rules of botanical nomenclature, photography and his own garden.

Eike Jablonski
Luxembourg College of Agriculture, Ettelbruck, Dept. of Horticulture and Arboretum

Lecturer for dendrology and nursery management at the Luxembourg College for Agriculture, horticultural department (LTA) in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, and also responsible for the woody collections and the propagation department.
Active as ISHS ICRA co-registrar for the genus Quercus and ISHS-ICRA registrar for the genus Tilia. Interested in cultivated plant taxonomy and nomenclature, with a main interest in genera of woody plants, especially the genera Quercus, Tilia, Sambucus, Spiraea and Crataegus. Currently building up the “lost cultivar project” with the aim to search and save ornamental woody plants which are no longer in cultivation or are thought to be extinct. President of the German Dendrology Society, Council Member of the International Dendrology Society and serving on the Taxonomy Committee of the International Oak Society. Member of HORTAX, serving on Group based in Wisley, England. He writes a regular column on cultivated plants in Luxembourg, is author of many articles in several magazines and journals and contributed
to major German works on dendrology, such as Enzyklopädie der Holzgewächse, Fitschen Gehölzflora
and Enzyklopädie der Gartengehölze.

Graduate of Landscape Architecture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Polish television presenter, writer and speaker on horticulture. Over the last twenty five years he has hosted and presented television gardening series “Rok w Ogrodzie”. He is a prolific author and has written numerous articles devoted to plants and gardening. Winner of the prestigious Honorary Green Laurel award granted by the Polish Nurserymen Association for dissemination of knowledge about plants, their use and benefits.

Polish Dendrology Society

A graduate of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw and doctor of biological sciences at the Insitute of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Longtime collaborator and author of numerous articles concerning plant compositions and monographs of select types, published in magazines such as Kwietnik,  Ogrody and Zieleń to Życie.  Since 2009, he has worked in the Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw, where he modernizes and develops the collection of the Plant Systems Department. He also consults about selection of plant species for garden designers. At the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw, he lectures and conducts seminars on the history and upkeep of gardens, as well as the species selection and plant compositions. Member of the Polish Dendrology Society and ICOMOS.

 

Maja Popielarska

Graduate of Landscape Architecture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Popular and well-liked weather presenter on television since 1999. Since 2004 she has her own advice show about plant care and garden design – “Maja in the garden”. Author of gardening books. Winner of the prestigious Honorary Green Laurel award granted by the Polish Nurserymen Association for instilling and developing the passion of gardening in society.

 

Karen Tambayong
The International Association of Horticultural Producers

Was born in Indonesia, and was educated in the fields of architecture and horticulture. She has travelled extensively to many countries and cities taking part in programs, seminars or conferences on green cities, and now she serves as the Chairperson of Green City Committee of AIPH (International Association of Horticultural Producers). She is a practicing professional of greening cities as the owner of Floribunda Nursery. She has had many green city planning, design, and implementation projects done very successfully. In addition to serving as advisors, officials of many international organizations, her one of the major domestic duties is the Indonesia National President Commissioner of State-Owned Plantation Company.

A graduate of the Faculty of Horticulture at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. As a researcher at the Department of Ornamental Plants for 25 years, he taught classes, gave lectures and seminars about ornamental nurseries. Author of numerous scientific publications and books, including “Ornamental Nursery”, “Propagating conifers”, co-author and editor of “Catalog of Plants”, “Plants for every garden” and popular scientific articles published in the columns of most magazines appearing on the market devoted to ornamental plants. Vice-president of the Polish Nurserymen Association, member of the Polish Dendrology Society, member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice. For 25 years, also operates his own nursery farm.

Actinidia arguta 'Chang Bai Giant'

A variety which produces exceptionally big, green fruit (so called mini kiwi) which can be eaten with its skin. This is a strongly growing creeper climbing with pliable shoots around supports, growing up to 8 meter high. Annual shoots are 2-3 meter long. Leaves are oval, dark green, and in the fall they change color into yellow.  The plant blooms in May, it produces exclusively female flowers, therefore pollination and fruit set requires a near growing male plant of the same specie e.g. male ‘Weiki’. Fruits are big, flatten, they are 4-5 cm long and weigh up to 20 g, they ripen in October, they are very tasty. Fruiting starts 3-4 years after planting.  It requires warm positions, protected from wind, sunny, fertile, moist and well-drained soil. Hardiness zone: 6. The plant is sensitive to spring frost. It can be planted on arbors, pergolas, wire fences and be trained on the wires stretched between poles.

Ajuga tenorii PRINCESS NADIA

Ajuga Steenland 1Law, thick perennial, creating rosettes of colorful, half evergreen leaves, while blooming it reaches 10-20 cm in height.  It grows with runners. The leaves are obovate, rounded on tips, grey and green, surrounded with irregular, white cream border on the edges, in case of young leaves with a pink one. Basal leaves are smaller, thinner and longr, stem leaves are wider. The stems of inflorescences grow in May, flowers are numerous, small, blue and purple, set in tiers and interwoven with small leaves. The plant is easy to grow. It requires moist, fertile and well-drained soil, slightly acidic and semi-shady location Hardiness zone: 6b. It can be used as a perennial in small gardens and also as a seasonal plant to create compositions in bowls and balcony containers.

A tree with narrow columnar habit, growing up to 10 m in height. All shoots and branches are upright, they grow from trunks at acute angle. In case of older plants, the trunk, covered with white bark is decorative. The leaves are typical for the species, diamond-shaped, pointed at the ends, green, glossy outside, in the fall they turn yellow.  In the early spring the male golden inflorescences are ornamental. The tree does not require much as regards soil and is resistant to diseases, it is recommended to be grown in sunny locations. Hardiness zone: 2. It is perfect for planting along the streets and alleys in housing estates, use in parks and around office buildings as well as in small private gardens.

This is a dwarf tree with a round crown, usually offered for sale as a half standard tree (in a form of a graft on a low rootstock). A variety found as a shrub shoot mutation. It grows slowly, after 10 years it creates a crown with a 1 meter diameter. The shoots are short, strongly branched, leaves are small, older ones are dark green, young shoots are lush green. The tree is not very demanding as regards soil, it can be an interesting alternative to other spherical varieties of the species with more requirements in the sunny and semi-shady locations. Hardiness zone: 2. The variety recommended to be planted in small home and housing estate gardens, allotments and containers used to decorate balconies and terraces.

This is a dwarf, evergreen shrub with flattish round habit. After 10 years it reaches 50 cm in height. As it gets older it becomes wider. At the beginning its small, elongated leaves are intensively light green and glossy, later they become darker, matt, they grow at acute angle on stiff, upright shoots. The shrub has small requirements, grows best in well-drained soil, with neutral or alkaline pH. It tolerates drought and polluted air. It grows well both in full sun and semi-shady and shady locations. It is worth covering the shrubs which grow in sunny locations with sun shading net in winter. Hardiness zone: 6a. An attractive shrub recommended to be grown in a natural or trimmed form in historical gardens, particularly suited for low borders or covering small areas. It can be planted in pots.

A small tree with ornamental, mottled leaves and with a spreading habit which reaches 3-4 m in height. The blades of leaves are big, heart-shaped, set on long petioles, distinctive because of white streaks which create decorative, marbled patterns. The intensive variegation of leaves is stable and the leaves are not sunburnt. The pink flowers develop together with leaves at the turn of April and May, they are gathered in clusters in bunches. The flowers grow directly on trunks and branches and young twigs. The plant requires warm and protected locations, from sunny to semi-shady ones, soil with neutral up to alkaline pH, on average rich and moderately moist. Hardiness zone: 5. The tree is recommended for small gardens in the cities or patios or to be planted between the buildings.

A small tree with yellow-orange leaves and with a spreading habit which reaches 3-4 m in height. The blades of leaves are big, heart-shaped, set on long petioles, the youngest ones are intensively orange, they become light green as they are older. In summer in one tree we can see the leaves in all phases of development, thanks to which the plant remains multi-color attractively almost for the whole season. The pink flowers develop together with leaves at the turn of April and May, they are gathered in clusters in bunches. The flowers grow directly on trunks and branches and young twigs. The plant requires warm and protected, sunny locations, soil with neutral up to alkaline pH, on average rich and moderately moist. The variety is resistant to drought, heat and more resistant to frost than a parent specie. Hardiness zone: 5. The tree is recommended for small gardens in the cities or patios or to be planted between the buildings.

This is an evergreen small coniferous tree with a drooping habit. It grows slowly, after 10 years it reaches 3.5 m in height and 2 m in width. It is distinguished by the overhanging, thin shoots, which create an interesting, open-work crown with a regular conical shape. The long, dark green or blue-grey shoots are  filiform, covered with small scales. The tree grows well in fertile, moderately moist and well-drained soil in sunny or slightly shady locations. Hardiness zone: 5b. This is the attractive variety used as a sole plant in parks and private gardens.

Echinacea 'Delicious Nougat'

This is a perennial with upright and stiff, well-branched stems, which creates compact clumps growing up to 50 cm in height. The leaves are heart-shaped, dark green, rough to the touch, they create densely arranged rosette, from which at the turn of spring and summer the inflorescence shoots grow. At their tops the inflorescences in the form of heads with convex bottom, filled with short white ray flowers develop. At the edges of the inflorescences the long white ligular flowers are developed. The perennial blooms from June to August luring butterflies. It requires sunny locations, moderately moist, clayish soil, rich in humus. Hardiness zone: 4. The variety is recommended to be planted as a bedding plant in home gardens and garden plots. It is perfect for colorful compositions in shades of white.

This is a clumpy perennial plant with attractive, arching even leaves and big, red and orange flowers. The flowers are funnel-shaped with orange throat, made up of 6 red sepals with a visible, light line running along each of them. The external sepals are narrow, the internal parts are wide. The flowers are set on long bare stems growing above the leaves, they develop in June and July. The plant is easy to grow, it grows well in sunny and semi-shady locations in each garden soil, but not very infertile and dry. Hardiness zone: 4. The variety recommended to be planted in home gardens, urban and housing estate greenery zones as well as in containers.

The shrub with very stunning and long-lasting flowers in dark pink color which is seldom found in this specie. The flowers are gathered in flattish round inflorescences set on tops of the one year, strong stems. The shrubs bloom from the end of June to August. Their additional ornamental virtue are dark green, oval shaped leaves. The fast growing variety which reaches 1.2 m in height. In spring it requires to be cut. It best grows in constantly moderately moist soil, well-drained and rich in humus. The plant is tolerant of the sun. Hardiness zone: 5b. It can be used both in private gardens and parks as well as in urban greenery areas.

Hydrangea RUNAWAY BRIDE SNOW WHITE

A hybrid variety obtained thanks to cross-breeding of hydrangea with one of the Asian species, it is distinguished by atypical for the existing hydrangeas manner of inflorescences creation, which flower not only at the end of the stems, but also from all lateral buds along all shoots, both one-year and from the previous season. The inflorescences are flat, created from numerous, white sterile flowers surrounding inconspicuous fertile flowers. The flowers turn slightly pink as they get older. It starts blooming in June, blooms up to the fall. The shrub with wide-stretching habit, grows up to 50-100 cm in height. It requires sunny to semi-shady locations, well-drained, constantly moderately moist humus soil. Hardiness zone: 7. It is recommended to be planted in home gardens and in containers placed in terraces. The abundant flowering together with wide-stretching, overhanging habit make the plant look well while being planted in high containers.

Monarda BEE PRETTY

A perennial with unique, elongated, violet and purple flowers gathered in head inflorescences at the tops of the upright shoots. The stems are four-angular, leaves are oval-shaped, pointed at the ends, dark green, placed facing each other. It blooms abundantly from June to August, luring numerous butterflies and bees. It grows fast, by creating dense clumps up to 80 cm in height. The whole plant is pleasantly aromatic. It requires sunny locations, moist to moderately moist, clayish soil, rich in humus, with 5.8-6.5 pH. The variety is resistant to frost. Hardiness zone: 4. It is distinguished by the increased resistance to mildew. The plant is recommended to be grown in traditional perennial flowerbeds, in rustic, modern gardens as well as for plantings friendly to insects.

This is the first variety of Parthenocissus with strongly reduced, ornamental leaves. The climber attaches to supports up to 10 m in height  by means of tendrils tipped with adhesive pads. The leaves are complex, five-pinnule, single pinnules are deeply incised, dark green, in the fall they turn to bright red color. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, they develop in May. The plant is not very demanding, very tolerant of soil and location. Hardiness zone: 5a. This is a perfect climber to cover walls of the buildings, pergolas and fences, trellises, it can also picturesquely hang from big containers and walls.

This is a perennial grass that forms wide-stretching clumps of narrow, arching leaves with original, lemon color. This is the first variety of Pennisetum with yellow leaves. It grows up to 50 cm in height. In July it creates inflorescence shoots ended with cylindrical, spike inflorescences resembling bottle brushes. The inflorescences and leaves stunningly wave in the wind. The plants look beautifully in late summer and fall when in the misty mornings dew drops settle on the awns. It requires sunny locations or only slightly shady. Soil moderately rich, moist, with slightly acidic or neutral pH. Hardiness zone: 6. A variety recommended to be planted single or in groups as a colorful element in perennial flowerbeds, to be planted in the form of borders or in containers placed in balconies and terraces.

This is a Polish variety of phlox with two-color leaves and big, pink flowers. It is a high perennial with stiff, not branched shoots growing from short rhizomes, growing up to 100 cm in height. It creates ornamental, dark green leaves with yellow and green inside. In July and August the nice smelling, big, pink flowers with a dark centre, gathered in paniculate inflorescences bloom at the tops of shoots. A variety with small requirements, tolerates most of moderately moist garden soil, sunny to slightly shady  locations. Hardiness zone: 5b. It best looks in groups, planted in perennial beds or together with annual plants. The variety is recommended for rustic gardens.

This is a slow-growing, dwarf variety of black pine, creating a dense, oval-shaped crown with bristly texture. After 10 years the tree reaches 1 m in height. The needles are long, dark green, gathered in two on short shoots. This is a new variety, in which cones have not been observed so far. The plant requires highly sunny locations, it is very tolerant of soil but it does not like wet and not drained soil. Hardiness zone: 5b. The variety is perfect to be planted in pots placed in sunny balconies and terraces, in small home gardens, together with heathers and in rock gardens.

A Polish variety of Japanese azalea, which creates low, dwarf, but vigorously growing shrubs which can be a cover plant.  It creates numerous flat arrangements of  shoots, covered with small evergreen dark green leaves. The shrub grows up to 20 cm in height. It blooms in May by creating funnel-shaped, orange and red flowers gathered on tops of shoots in clusters in loose inflorescences. It blooms very abundantly. It requires acid, humus, well-drained, constantly moderately moist soil. Sunny to semi-shady locations. Hardiness zone: 6b. The variety meant for growing together with heathers, in rock and oriental gardens. Blends in with other low coniferous plants very nicely.

This is a climbing rose with very clear, orange color of flowers. It grows strongly, creates long shoots covered with thorns and big, dark green and glossy leaves. It grows up to 1.5-2 m in height. The flowers are big, semi-double, made up of numerous petals with the original coppery and orange color. They are gathered in clusters on tops of the stems. The shrubs bloom in the early summer and repeat blooming for the whole season. Non-fruiting. It requires sunny and warm locations, protected from wind, rich, clayish, well-drained and moderately moist soil with humus. The variety is resistant to fungal diseases. Hardiness zone: 6b. The rose is recommended to be planted in home gardens, growing on pergolas, fences, trellises and other supports.

The leaves are dark green, wrinkled, in the fall they turn into orange. The semi-double, purplish red and slightly fragrant flowers develop from June to August. The red, flattish round fruits ripen in August, the shrub is very decorative thanks to them until winter. The rose is very resistant to drought and frost, tolerant of the soil. It requires sunny or slightly shady locations. Hardiness zone: 3. The variety is decorative for the whole season to be planted in cities along the streets, for strengthening embankments as well as to be planted in home gardens.

This is a low bushy perennial with upright habit and intensely pink flowers and involucres. While blooming it grows up to 30 cm in height. It creates small, elliptical leaves with corrugated edges. The blades of leaves are green and wrinkled. The flowers are pretty big, dorsiventral, pink, gathered in straight ear inflorescences. The plant blooms in June and July luring bees and butterflies. When overblown inflorescences are removed the plant is stimulated to form new flower buds, which extends its blooming period. The perennial is tolerant of ground, it grows well in moderately moist to dry soil, in the sunny locations. The variety is resistant to frost, Hardiness zone: 5. It is recommended to be planted in groups in the perennial beds, in rock gardens and in containers.

Weigela florida LIME MONSTER

A Polish variety of Weigela which is characterized by extremely big leaves with an interesting, light green (lime) color. The shrub grows up to 1.5 m in height. Young shoots are pretty thin, upright, covered with reddish skin. The leaves are very big, can measure up to 25 cm in length, they are slightly corrugated and misshapen. They resemble exuberant leaves of basil which makes the plant look stunning and exotic. In the late summer red blushes appear in the leaves. The flowers are not numerous, pink, without a big significance. The soil is to be moderately moist, averagely rich with neutral pH. Hardiness zone: 6a. Th variety is recommended for home gardens, parks and urban  greenery areas. It can be planted in groups or along with other shrubs or perennials The shoots with big leaves can be used for floristic compositions.
