Actinidia arguta HOKEY POKEY®
GOLD MEDAL OF PLANT NOVELTIES COMPETITION 2020
Actinidia arguta HOKEY POKEY®
Polish variety of actinidia selected at the Clematis Źródło Dobrych Pnączy nursery in Pruszków near Warsaw. It is a climber with two-colored leaves and tasty fruit, combining the features of an ornamental and a useful plant. It creates slender shoots twining around the supports, grows slowly up to 4 m in height. Lanceolate leaves, 5-10 cm long and 2-4 cm wide, green with an irregular, lemon-yellow border. The leaves turn yellow in the autumn. Small, white flowers, 1-2 cm in diameter, unfold in June. Parthenocarpic, self-fertile variety. The fruits are edible, green berries 2 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, with a taste similar to kiwi. They can be eaten with the peel and have a lemon flavor. They ripen at the end of September and October, and after ripening they remain on the shoots. The climber starts fruiting in the 2nd or 3rd year after planting. Requires warm, sheltered, sunny, fertile, moist and well-drained soil. The plant withstands temperatures down to about - 22°C in winter (zone 6b), but is sensitive to spring frosts. It is suitable for planting next to arbors, pergolas, mesh fences, as well as for running on wires stretched between posts. The variety is especially useful for growing in home gardens and allotments.
