Echinacea 'Delicious Nougat' PBR

This is a perennial with upright and stiff, well-branched stems, which creates compact clumps growing up to 50 cm in height. The leaves are heart-shaped, dark green, rough to the touch, they create densely arranged rosette, from which at the turn of spring and summer the inflorescence shoots grow. At their tops the inflorescences in the form of heads with convex bottom, filled with short white ray flowers develop. At the edges of the inflorescences the long white ligular flowers are developed. The perennial blooms from June to August luring butterflies. It requires sunny locations, moderately moist, clayish soil, rich in humus. Hardiness zone: 4. The variety is recommended to be planted as a bedding plant in home gardens and garden plots. It is perfect for colorful compositions in shades of white.

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Drooping Solo'

This is an evergreen small coniferous tree with a drooping habit. It grows slowly, after 10 years it reaches 3.5 m in height and 2 m in width. It is distinguished by the overhanging, thin shoots, which create an interesting, open-work crown with a regular conical shape. The long, dark green or blue-grey shoots are  filiform, covered with small scales. The tree grows well in fertile, moderately moist and well-drained soil in sunny or slightly shady locations. Hardiness zone: 5b. This is the attractive variety used as a sole plant in parks and private gardens.

Cercis canadensis THE RISING SUN 'JN2'

A small tree with yellow-orange leaves and with a spreading habit which reaches 3-4 m in height. The blades of leaves are big, heart-shaped, set on long petioles, the youngest ones are intensively orange, they become light green as they are older. In summer in one tree we can see the leaves in all phases of development, thanks to which the plant remains multi-color attractively almost for the whole season. The pink flowers develop together with leaves at the turn of April and May, they are gathered in clusters in bunches. The flowers grow directly on trunks and branches and young twigs. The plant requires warm and protected, sunny locations, soil with neutral up to alkaline pH, on average rich and moderately moist. The variety is resistant to drought, heat and more resistant to frost than a parent specie. Hardiness zone: 5. The tree is recommended for small gardens in the cities or patios or to be planted between the buildings.

Cercis canadensis 'Alley Cat'

A small tree with ornamental, mottled leaves and with a spreading habit which reaches 3-4 m in height. The blades of leaves are big, heart-shaped, set on long petioles, distinctive because of white streaks which create decorative, marbled patterns. The intensive variegation of leaves is stable and the leaves are not sunburnt. The pink flowers develop together with leaves at the turn of April and May, they are gathered in clusters in bunches. The flowers grow directly on trunks and branches and young twigs. The plant requires warm and protected locations, from sunny to semi-shady ones, soil with neutral up to alkaline pH, on average rich and moderately moist. Hardiness zone: 5. The tree is recommended for small gardens in the cities or patios or to be planted between the buildings.

Buxus microphylla 'Rococo'

This is a dwarf, evergreen shrub with flattish round habit. After 10 years it reaches 50 cm in height. As it gets older it becomes wider. At the beginning its small, elongated leaves are intensively light green and glossy, later they become darker, matt, they grow at acute angle on stiff, upright shoots. The shrub has small requirements, grows best in well-drained soil, with neutral or alkaline pH. It tolerates drought and polluted air. It grows well both in full sun and semi-shady and shady locations. It is worth covering the shrubs which grow in sunny locations with sun shading net in winter. Hardiness zone: 6a. An attractive shrub recommended to be grown in a natural or trimmed form in historical gardens, particularly suited for low borders or covering small areas. It can be planted in pots.

Betula pendula MAGICAL GLOBE 'Globe'PBR

This is a dwarf tree with a round crown, usually offered for sale as a half standard tree (in a form of a graft on a low rootstock). A variety found as a shrub shoot mutation. It grows slowly, after 10 years it creates a crown with a 1 meter diameter. The shoots are short, strongly branched, leaves are small, older ones are dark green, young shoots are lush green. The tree is not very demanding as regards soil, it can be an interesting alternative to other spherical varieties of the species with more requirements in the sunny and semi-shady locations. Hardiness zone: 2. The variety recommended to be planted in small home and housing estate gardens, allotments and containers used to decorate balconies and terraces.

Betula pendula FASTIGIATA JOES 'Jolep1'

A tree with narrow columnar habit, growing up to 10 m in height. All shoots and branches are upright, they grow from trunks at acute angle. In case of older plants, the trunk, covered with white bark is decorative. The leaves are typical for the species, diamond-shaped, pointed at the ends, green, glossy outside, in the fall they turn yellow.  In the early spring the male golden inflorescences are ornamental. The tree does not require much as regards soil and is resistant to diseases, it is recommended to be grown in sunny locations. Hardiness zone: 2. It is perfect for planting along the streets and alleys in housing estates, use in parks and around office buildings as well as in small private gardens.

Ajuga tenorii PRINCESS NADIA 'Piotrek01' PBR

Ajuga Steenland 1Law, thick perennial, creating rosettes of colorful, half evergreen leaves, while blooming it reaches 10-20 cm in height.  It grows with runners. The leaves are obovate, rounded on tips, grey and green, surrounded with irregular, white cream border on the edges, in case of young leaves with a pink one. Basal leaves are smaller, thinner and longr, stem leaves are wider. The stems of inflorescences grow in May, flowers are numerous, small, blue and purple, set in tiers and interwoven with small leaves. The plant is easy to grow. It requires moist, fertile and well-drained soil, slightly acidic and semi-shady location Hardiness zone: 6b. It can be used as a perennial in small gardens and also as a seasonal plant to create compositions in bowls and balcony containers.

Actinidia arguta 'Chang Bai Giant'

A variety which produces exceptionally big, green fruit (so called mini kiwi) which can be eaten with its skin. This is a strongly growing creeper climbing with pliable shoots around supports, growing up to 8 meter high. Annual shoots are 2-3 meter long. Leaves are oval, dark green, and in the fall they change color into yellow.  The plant blooms in May, it produces exclusively female flowers, therefore pollination and fruit set requires a near growing male plant of the same specie e.g. male ‘Weiki’. Fruits are big, flatten, they are 4-5 cm long and weigh up to 20 g, they ripen in October, they are very tasty. Fruiting starts 3-4 years after planting.  It requires warm positions, protected from wind, sunny, fertile, moist and well-drained soil. Hardiness zone: 6. The plant is sensitive to spring frost. It can be planted on arbors, pergolas, wire fences and be trained on the wires stretched between poles.

Join to the Plants Novelties Competition

This year, for the second time, plant novelties may be requested to admission to the competition not only by exhibitors of GREEN IS LIFE. We kindly invite all persons who want to popularize and promote their plants - growers, nurserymen, authors of new varieties.

Organized by Polish Nurserymen Association Plant Novelties Competition is a constant event of International Exhibition GREEN IS LIFE (Warsaw, 5-7 September 2019) and only such competition in Poland. Its aim is to extensively promote new, interesting varieties of trees, shrubs, climbers and perennials. So far, the participation in the competition was reserved only for participants of trade (exhibitors). However the management board of ZSzP enabled admission of novelties for broader circle of interested parties - growers, nurserymen, authors of new varieties who do not have to be exhibitors, but they wish to popularize and offer them to the broader circle of recipients. The plants are assessed and awarded by the international jury. The special distinction of journalists has been awarded for 3 years.

PROMOTION

The participation in the competition provides many benefits connected with the promotion of novelties requested to admission and their authors. Portraits of plants are published not only in the exihbition guide, websites of the exhibition, ZSzP and e-brochure of plants but they are also widely promoted in national and international gardening magazines, TV programs and via social media. The winning plant is printed on the cover of Nurserymen Catalogue.

Prizes and distinctions are awarded during the inauguration of exhibition in the presence of many journalists. The great location of stand, where the novelties are presented, ensures that most of guests who visit the trade, starts their visit from visiting the competition display.

CRITERION OF NOVELTY

The subject of the competition are perennial plants such as trees, shrubs, climbers, small shrubs and perennials from 1-7b USDA climate zones which meet the criterion of novelty. New taxa, which have been recently introduced to production and/or are cultivated in Poland for a little while (since a couple of years) or they were introduced to production after a long break are regarded as novelties. Those plants should be available for sale. Details of requirements, criteria, organizational information can be found in the rules of competition at www.zszp.pl.

ADMISSION REQUEST

The request to admit varieties to the competition on the basis of the application form, which together with photographs shall be submitted to the office of Polish Nurserymen Association, Al. Jana Pawła II 80 office 71, 00-175 Warsaw or sent via e-mail at: zszp@zszp.pl up to 01/07/2019 to 12:59 p.m. Registration fee for each variety requested to admission amounts to: 145 EUR for Green is Life exhibitors and 235 EUR for applicant from outside the group of Green is Life exhibitors.

Plants admitted to the competition shall be delivered one day before the opening of the exhibition, i.e. 4 September 2019 up to 12:00 to the office of the trade organizer within the area of exhibition in number from 1 to 10 units depending on the size of plants.
