Abies koreana 'Forest Child'

Slow-growing, dwarf fir with a flattish round shape, growing up to 60 cm in diameter in ten years. Numerous, short shoots, strongly branched. Evergreen needles, short and stiff, arranged radially around the shoots. The needles are dark green from the top, slightly shiny, on the bottom there are two wide strands of a silvery wax coating. Spherical top buds, covered with light brown-colored scales. The variety is offered in a spectacular miniature tree form, grafted at different heights.

The plant prefers fertile, moderately moist, permeable soils with a slightly acidic pH. Requires a sunny position, but also tolerates semi-shaded positions. Frost resistant variety (zone 5b).

Recommended mainly for home gardens. It looks best planted in beds, moors, rock gardens and in oriental style compositions. It is suited for growing in containers placed on balconies and terraces.

Acer platanoides 'Warmia'

Tree characterized by exceptionally narrow, columnar habit. The crown is slimmer than in the 'Columnare' cultivar. Growth rate typical of the species, after ten years of cultivation the tree reaches 7-8 m in height. It creates a strong lead with short, raised side branches. Palmate leaves on long, thin petioles, with pronounced 5-7 flaps and several sharp pointed teeth, dark green, yellow in autumn.

Tree with no special requirements, tolerates most soils with the exception of extremely dry soils or wetlands. Prefers sunny to semi-shady locations.  Resistant to frost (zone 4), tolerates difficult urban conditions.

The variety is recommended for gardens with limited space, where there is no space for large trees, for estate greenery and for avenue and street trees.

Agastache 'Morello'

A bushy, aromatic perennial that forms a mass of red-purple flowers. It grows up to 70 cm in height. The stems are straight, weakly branched. Triangular, dark green leaves with crenate or serrate margins and covered with fine hairs and glands. Spiky inflorescences grow on the tops of stems and leaf angles in June. The reddish purple flowers, small and double-lipped, are collected in multifloral whorls. At the stem tops the flowers are arranged very densely, in the lower parts they are arranged more loosely. The plant blooms until the end of the summer, attracting numerous pollinating insects when flowering.

Agastache prefers fertile, permeable, moderately moist and slightly acidic soils. Requires sunny locations. Healthy variety, frost resistant (zone 6).

Ajuga reptans 'Gold Chang'

Low growing, ground cover perennial, and unparalleled for this species, green-yellow leaves and attractive pink flowers. During flowering, it grows up to 15 cm in height. It creates terrestrial runners, helping it to expand rapidly. The leaves are small, obovate, narrower at the base and rounded at the top, gathered in a rosette. The leaf laminae are slightly wrinkled. Young leaves are light green with yellow discolorations, older leaves lime colored. The plants are decorated with pink flowers gathered in slender, spiky inflorescences. The flowers develop from the end of April to the end of May.

Ajuga reptans prefers partial shady and shady locations, constantly moist soil, preferably humus, but also tolerates less fertile substrates. Calycanthus ×raulstonii 'Aphrodite'

Shrub with exotic wine red flowers and nice, seasonal foliage. It grows up to 2-2.5 m in height. It forms quite large, elliptic, light-green leaves, slightly shiny on the surface, turning yellow in autumn. Flower buds appear individually at the tops of short shoots growing on last year's branches. The flowers are big, 8-9 cm in diameter when fully open. They are comprised of a dozen or so veined, dark red petals surrounding yellow stamens. The inner petals are shorter and shell-like in the center of the flower. Flowers appear from the end of May to the turn of July and August, give off a delicate aroma of apples, and their color contrasts intensely with the juicy green color of the leaves.

The bush is healthy and easy to grow, has no pests or diseases, highly tolerant of soil type and location. Prefers warm locations, secluded, sheltered from the wind. In Western Poland, the plant is frost resistant, in the east of the country, young plants require winter coating (zone 6b).

Small tree growing up to 3-4 m tall with decorative, multi-colored and variegated leaves. Broad habit, loose crown. Leaf blades are large, cordate, in numerous shades of white, pink, purple and green, set on long, pinkish purple petioles. These colors are mainly found on young leaves, also in the form of interwoven streaks, dots and patches. The leaves turn green late in the summer. Pink flowers develop together with leaves at the turn of April and May, gathered in bunches. The flowers are formed directly on trunks and boughs as well as on the young shoots.

The plant requires warm and sheltered positions, sunny to semi-shady, neutral to alkaline soil, average fertility and moderately moist. Frost resistant cultivar (zone 5b).

Shrub with decorative leaves that change color during the season and fluffy, effective fruits. It grows up to 1.5 - 2 m in height. Plants spread well, forming numerous, straight shoots. Single leaves with smooth edges, obovate, magenta in the spring, green in the summer, turning intensely red and orange in the fall. Small, inconspicuous flowers develop in June, gathered in loose, paniculate inflorescences. The stalks of sterile flowers grow and become pinnate, thus creating characteristic, fluffy, pink wigs.

Cypripedium reginae

A strong growing garden orchid growing up to 90 cm in height. 3 to 8 broad-leafed, light-green leaves on straight, stiff shoots. The leaves are 10 to over 20 cm long and 5 to 15 cm wide, covered with hairs. From mid-May to mid-June, 1-3 unique trap-shaped flowers in the shape of slippers develop on the tops of the shoots. The boot (shoe) is very impressive, the size of a hen's egg, pale pink to maroon, with white streaks, perianth leaves are snow-white. A single flower is over 10 cm in diameter.

Easy to grow orchid requiring moderately moist, slightly acidic and humus substrate prepared from porous additives, such as expanded clay aggregate, perlite, vermiculite, seramis. Prefers shady and partially shady locations. Plant fully resistant to frost (zone 4).

Miscanthus sinensis 'Boucle'

Fast-growing ornamental grass that forms high clumps. Topped with attractive, purple florets in the autumn. The plant grows up to 0.7-0.8 m in height, during flowering it reaches up to 1.1 m in height. The long, regularly tapering leaves are green with a white main vein. The ends of the leaves growing on the top of the blades take on a purple-burgundy shade. At the end of the summer, the plants form spherical, paniculate inflorescences, which in the first stage of development are extremely fleshy, heavily wrinkled, thick and purple-burgundy in color.

A compact, flowering perennial attracting numerous pollinating insects - bees, butterflies and bumblebees. It forms low, dense clusters growing up to 30 cm in height. The stems from the bottom are strongly branched. Small, ovoid lanceolate green leaves on short petioles, notched or scored, wrinkled. Blue flowers with purple goblets gathered in several whorls on the tops of the shoots. The plant blooms for a long time, from June to September. Trimming of dry inflorescences prolongs flowering.

The plant is easy to cultivate and grows on most permeable, moderately moist garden soils. It tolerates drought quite well, requires sunny positions. Resistant to frost (zone 4).

Perennial with versatile use, recommended for planting in groups. Suitable for growing in containers set against sun balconies and terraces.

Phlox paniculata 'Warsaw Sunrise'

Attractive cultivar with multicolored leaves and pink flowers. It is a tall perennial with stiff, unbranched stems growing from short rhizomes, growing up to 1 m in height. It creates decorative, yellow-cream leaves with irregular, green spots and blurred margins, located along the main vein. Large, pink and fragrant flowers with magenta eye gathered in inflorescences form on stem tops in July and August.

A cultivar with low requirements, tolerates most moderately moist garden soils, prefers sunny locations to slightly shady. Frost resistant plant (zone 5b).

Looks best planted in groups in perennial beds, where it creates a distinct color accent.

Physocarpus opulifolius TINY WINE GOLD

The first dwarf Physocarpus with yellow foliage. It is a compact shrub growing to 1.2 m in height. It forms stiff, densely arranged shoots. The leaves are three-lobed, clearly smaller than that of the species. Young leaf blades are intensely yellow, older yellow-green. In semi-shaded positions the leaves take on a lime color. The shrub blooms at the turn of May and June. Slightly pink buds develop into small white flowers in umbellate inflorescences.

Shrub with low cultivation requirements, prefers moderately moist and permeable soil, tolerates drought and pollution. Recommended for sunny or semi-shaded locations. Highly tolerant of pruning, fully resistant to frost (zone 4).

Cultivar is recommended for planting in groups, also in the form of low, unformed hedges in private gardens and public greenery.

Potentilla fruticosa DOUBLE PUNCH PASTEL

A compact shrub growing up to 50 cm tall with large, semi-double flowers. Thin, brown shoots.  Fine, green leaves, pinnate, composed of five gently mossy leaves. Cream-pink, semi-double flowers appear at the end of May. Creamy-peach at the beginning of flowering with a thin pink border at the edges of the petals. Older flowers are lighter. Bushes bloom throughout the summer, the flowering season falls in the second half of June.

The shrub grows well in garden soils, moderately moist, well-drained, in sunny or slightly shaded positions. Frost resistant variety (zone 4).

Plant recommended for beds in home gardens and in parks, and for container growing on balconies and terraces.

Rhododendron 'Pernilla'

Evergreen shrub from the group of grandiflorum rhododendrons with a dense, erect habit, reaching 1.8 m in height after ten years of cultivation. Leaves are elongated, leathery and mat dark green. Creates spherical, magnificent inflorescences at the tops of shoots composed of several white, funnel-shaped flowers, with pink buds. The top petal of each flower is decorated with brown-orange spots. Golden pollen bags suspended on white strands of stamens are visible in the center of each flower.

The shrub requires acidic soils, preferably humus, peat, having a pH in the range 3.5-4.5, constantly moist, partially shaded positions. Good frost resistance (zone 5b).

The shrub is recommended for growing in home gardens, parks and urban greenery.

A vigorous tree with a light, openwork crown reaching 8-10 m in height, characterized by original, bi-colored flowers. The leaves are pinnate, composed of several leaves. Papilionaceous flowers, comprised of a pink wing and white keel gathered in clusters of inflorescences. Blooms profusely in June and repeats flowering in September. Another advantage is its honey-richness, beneficial for bees during flowering.

The plant is very tolerant in terms of soil type, endures urban conditions. Prefers sunny positions. Resistant to frost (zone 5a).

The cultivar is recommended for larger home gardens, parks, naturalistic compositions and urban greenery.

A variety from the group of floribunda roses. A low, compact shrub with an upright habit growing up to 60-80 cm in height. Straight, raised, spiked shoots covered with dark green leaves. Large, double pink flowers, reminiscent of peonies, intensely fragrant. Wide, shell-shaped petals, dark pink on the inside, on the other side lighter. Flowering is abundant and long-lasting, and the flowers form from June until late autumn.

The plant is recommended for cultivation on fertile, loamy, humus, permeable soils. Requires sunny positions. Moderate frost resistance (zone 6a-6b).

Rose recommended for planting in home gardens and public greenery, suitable for cut flowers.

A dense shrub with a broad columnar habit growing up to 2-3 m in height. Moderate growth rate. Numerous upright shoots, branches arranged vertically. Green needles thick, wide and pointed. Young light green growths look beautiful against older, darker needles. The female variety sets small amounts of seeds in fleshy, red arils. Shrub tolerant to soil type and location. It grows well on calcareous soils, moderately moist, permeable, both in full sunlight and in shade. Cultivar resistant to low temperatures (zone 5b). Initially, as dendrologist, then a specialist in tropical plants, and more recently involved in native flora. Has participated in many botanical expeditions in Poland and abroad, among others to North Korea., Vietnam, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Author of more than 250 popular scientific articles on dendrology, tropical plants and Polish flora. Author the Latin-Polish dictionary of Herbaceous Plants. Primarily interested in Polish flora, the rules of botanical nomenclature, photography and his own garden.

Hanna Grzeszczak-Nowak

Since 1988, acting director of the Wojsławice Arboretum, then inspector of this Arboretum. Has consistently revitalized and developed the Arboretum. Maintains many unique collections of plants, including four national collections of types of Buxus, Hedera, Hemerocallis, and Rhododendrons. For years, promotes the cultivation of ornamental plants, organizing a number of events, including “HEMEROmania”, The Autumn Flower and Grass Festival, Lower Silesia Pumpkin Festival, Ivy weekend. Wojciech Podstolski PhD

A graduate of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw and doctor of biological sciences at the Insitute of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Longtime collaborator and author of numerous articles concerning plant compositions and monographs of select types, published in magazines such as Kwietnik, Ogrody and Zieleń to Życie. Since 2009, he has worked in the Botanical Garden of the University of Warsaw, where he modernizes and develops the collection of the Plant Systems Department. He also consults about selection of plant species for garden designers. At the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw, he lectures and conducts seminars on the history and upkeep of gardens, as well as the species selection and plant compositions. Member of the Polish Dendrology Society and ICOMOS.
